The History Of The Classic Film, Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is returning to theaters in the new film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The film is the long-awaited sequel to one of the most popular films from the 1980s.

The sequel brings back its stars, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder. Tim Burton, one of cinema’s most visionary filmmakers, returns to the director’s chair for the follow up. The story of Beetlejuice started in the 1980s, and it helped to propel the careers of Keaton, Ryder, and Burton.

Darker

The original film was written by Michael McDowell. McDowell would later team with screenwriter Larry Wilson to finish the screenplay. The original script and idea were much darker than the final version of Beetlejuice.

Visionary

Tim Burton made his directorial debut with Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. The film, which starred 80s comedy legend, Pee Wee Herman, was an ambitious and energic film. It had the kind of spark of creativity that was needed for Beetlejuice.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure

Disney

Burton grew up loving old movies. He had a passion for drawing cartoons.

His first professional job in the industry was for Disney. Disney recognized the talent of Burton and gave him the ability to make a short film called Vincent. Vincent was dedicated to Burton’s love of Vincent Price.

Dark Humor and Striking Visuals

After the success of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Burton could make any film he wanted. But he was not offered anything that excited him. Until he was presented with the script for Beetlejuice.

The horror comedy was a big hit. It also established Burton’s singular directorial style. The dark humor and strikingly odd visuals he would become known for were on full display in Beetlejuice.

Slapstick Humor

Tim Burton would partner with Michael Keaton for the film. This was their first collaboration. But they would later team for one of the most anticipated films of all time, Batman.

Beetlejuice was a unique role for Keaton. He was known for his comedy, but this character was very zany.

It seemed better suited for an actor like Robin Williams, who had a wild persona. Keaton shined in the role and was able to achieve the slapstick style of performance needed. Burton was so impressed with Keaton he cast him against type once again, as the Caped Crusader.
