Rihanna was born on February 20, 1988. She is from Barbados. The pop star was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty. She was inspired by an array of music as a child. Caribbean music, reggae, as well as hip hop and pop from the United States were the types of music she enjoyed and was influenced by. Her musical path started simply, with her performing in talent shows at school and starting musical groups with her friends. Her talent would eventually catch the attention of American record producers. As more attention was gained, she would change her name to simply Rihanna.
Stardom
Eventually Rihanna would garner the attention of Jay-Z. He would sign her instantly to Def Jam, which at the time he was the head of. “Pon de Replay” would be her first major hit when it dropped in 2005. Rihanna was only 17 when she started to make her mark on the industry. Her vocal style was unique, with her Caribbean sound mixing perfectly with her pop sensibilities. As her career continued to blossom, and she grew as an artist, Rihanna started to solidify herself more as an R&B singer. She would later collab with Jay-Z on the song, Umbrella, which would become one of her biggest hits. Rihanna would collaborate with more big names as her career progressed.
