The XXIII

Tinker Hatfield and Michael Jordan teamed up once again for the Air Jordan XXIII. The significance of the number 23 made it imperative that Tinker return to design for the Jordan Brand. Tinker and MJ set out to do something epic with the shoe. The result of that pursuit of greatness is one of the most complex and complicated shoes of its time. Intense research and innovation went into the development of the 23. Air Jordan shoes are always inspired by something, often speed. Jordan and Hatfield wanted to use a different approach for the 23. The duo wanted the 23 to be the best Air Jordan yet – that was the inspiration. The Jordan Brand team focused painstakingly on every aspect of the shoe. The goal was to create the greatest Air Jordan sneaker of all time. Jordan Brand athletes Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton, and Joe Johnson wore the 23 on the court.

The 23 featured minimal branding. Michael Jordan’s identity is still a big piece of the shoe’s design. MJ’s thumbprint is on the inside of the tongue. If you look close enough, you will find Michael Jordan’s signature printed on the toebox. “M” & “J” is stitched on the upper. The 23 was the first basketball shoe created under Nike’s “Considered Design” ethos. Considered Design was focused on creating shoes that were keeping the health of the environment in mind. The use of environmentally preferred materials could not compromise the performance and durability of the shoe. The upper featured premium leather with embroidered patterns. High performance technology was packed into its sleek silhouette. The 23 was padded around the heel and featured a bootie for maximum comfort. The 23 utilized a full length Zoom Air unit. The 23 offered an ideal fit.

End Of An Era
