A new young star is starting to make her mark on the music industry. American singer Lara Raj is part of one of the freshest new girl groups out there today but continues to stand out as an individual with her impressive vocal abilities and effortlessly cool sense of style.

Aspirations

Raj had musical aspirations all her life with influences like her older sister guiding her through the music-creation process. A portion of her early life was spent in Texas where she took acting, vocal, and dance lessons. She became a part of an artist development that afforded her many opportunities to perform at venues such as Six Flags and Hard Rock Cafe. During this time, she had also won a singing competition that sent her to New York city to join a professional program.

She attended both a performing arts middle and high school while living in New York. During those years in school the performer took on commercial acting jobs for advertisements like Spotify, Macy’s, and even Michelle Obama's Global Girls Alliance campaign launch video.

Big Break

The beginning of the singer’s big break started after she was scouted for a reality T.V. show through her song covers posted on TikTok.

The show, titled The Debut: Dream Academy, is a talent competition series with the objective of forming a new global girl group. It was created by entertainment companies Hybe and Geffen Records. In 2023 the show ended with Raj placing second overall and securing her spot in the newly formed global girl group Katseye.

Katseye has blown up online with an already extensive and steadily growing fanbase. Their hit singles “Gnarly” and “Touch” put them on the map, with the “Gnarly” earning the group their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The group is already Grammy-

nominated with a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance as well as Best New Artist at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.

Authenticity

Even within the group, Raj is authentically herself and has become a common favorite among fans. The singer has used her platform to advocate for other South Asian women in the industry as well, using Indian influences in her style and not staying quiet about the issues that come with being in the spotlight.
