Obama and His Love for Basketball
Former President Barack Obama is known for many things, one thing you may not know is that basketball is a beloved hobby of his. Long before he became the 44th President of the United States, basketball was an important presence in his life.
It served as a source of joy, discipline, community, and balance that he did not lose under the pressures of politics and leadership. A great example of this was when he famously played pickup basketball on Election Day, calling it a ritual to calm his nerves and clear his mind.
Photographs and stories of Obama shooting hoops on the White House court or during campaign stops became iconic, reinforcing the image of a leader who valued both physical fitness and mental balance. For him, basketball was not just exercise, it was a form of meditation as well. He has said to be calm, cool, and collected even in the heat of the moment.
While President
During his presidency, an outdoor court was adapted from a tennis court on the grounds by adding court lines and hoops. And of course, this court was put to good use with good company which included an array of NBA basketball players from LeBron James to Magic Johnson. Even after he left the White House, he continued to channel some energy into basketball.
NBA Partner
In 2021 he became the strategic partner for NBA Africa to advocate for things like gender equality and help with social responsibilities. This hobby originated in his childhood years.
While growing up in Honolulu he was a player on Hawaii Punahou School’s varsity team and in 1979 won the state championship with them. He has shared that the sport is where he created his closes friendships. During his presidency and time in the public
eye he has continued to use basketball to connect with people and let his true personality shine through.
