All About Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the world’s most famous actors, with his films grossing $7 billion worldwide. He began his career vigorously auditioning with little luck. After he was recommended to directors by a talent agent, his television career took flight in the 1990s. He started off acting in commercials and a television series, which led to his film debut not long after.
The Start
The Los Angeles native took on his first major role in 1993 as author Tobias Wolff in the film This Boy's Life. The same year he played a pivotal role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination.
In 1996 the actor starred in the classic romance Romeo + Juliet, followed by his iconic role as Jack in Titanic the year after which became the highest-grossing film at the time.
Titanic was a cultural reset, earning $2.1 billion at the worldwide box office and eleven Academy Awards. This was also a reset for DiCaprio’s career, turning him into a teen heartthrob and amassing a huge fan base. The craze was known at the time as “Leo-mania.”
Working With The Best
After a short hiatus DiCaprio broke away from his romance streak in 2002 to star in two crime dramas, Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York, the first directed by Steven Speilberg and the second by Martin Scorsese.
DiCaprio worked with Scorsese on a number of other projects including The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). The actor has worked with a number of other notable directors as well like Quentin Tarantino, Baz Luhrman, and Christopher Nolan.
Off Screen
Apart from acting, DiCaprio is the founder of his own production company, Appian Way Productions, which is responsible for producing a few of his films. He is also known for
his work with the climate change issues and global warming. He created the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation in 1998 which is a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting environmental awareness. The foundation has funded numerous environmental documentaries.
