40 Years Of Space Jam
In 2026, Space Jam celebrates its 40th anniversary. A milestone for one of the most iconic crossovers in entertainment history. Released on November 15, 1996, the film teamed up basketball legend Michael Jordan with cartoon icon Bugs Bunny.
It used a groundbreaking mix of live action and animation.
More than a movie, Space Jam became a cultural phenomenon. It bridged sports, animation, and sneaker culture in a way never done before.
Bugs Bunny
Bugs Bunny first appeared in animated form in 1938, though he looked slightly different from the wisecracking hare we know today. His official debut came in 1940, marking the beginning of one of animation’s most enduring characters.
Over the decades, Bugs became the face of Looney Tunes. He starred in many shorts, TV series, and films. This made him a pop culture legend, long before he teamed up with Michael Jordan.
MJ & HARE JORDAN
The partnership between Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny began in 1992. It started with a now-legendary Super Bowl commercial for the Air Jordan VII.
In a surprising shift, filmmaker Spike Lee (as Mars Blackmon) stepped aside, making room for Bugs Bunny as Jordan’s new co-star. The campaign introduced the world to “Hare Jordan,” blending animation and live action in a way that was ahead of its time.
The success continued in 1993 with the Air Jordan VIII campaign. It made the duo one of the most memorable marketing partnerships in sports history.
Space Jam
Space Jam took the MJ–Bugs partnership to the next level. In the film, Michael Jordan plays himself. He teams up with the Looney Tunes. They face the alien “Monstars” in a high-stakes basketball game.
The movie featured beloved characters like Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. It introduced a new generation to the Looney Tunes universe.
It was a major box office success and became one of Jordan’s most iconic moments off the court. Its legacy even led to a modern sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy, starring LeBron James.
